The Rebecca Cornell Chapter was organized December 14, 1915, and was named for a Real Daughter of the American Revolution from Schoharie, New York--Rebecca Cornell. Her grandfather, Capt. Her father, William Cornell, and her mother, Hannah Finch, were captured by Indians but made their escape.

William joined the American forces and was
an Ensign in the
5th Tryon Co. Regiment under Colonel Harper. He was captured by the British but a second time escaped his captors. He was wounded at the Battle of Oriskany, fighting under General Herkimer. Rebecca married Horace Townsend in 1801 and in the course of time was a mother to eleven children.
